Ergo

Ergo is a gold surface tailings retreatment operation located on the East Rand of Gauteng, South Africa. The facility is owned and operated by DRDGOLD, a specialist surface gold tailings retreatment company. Ergo processes historical mine tailings dumps left behind by decades of deep-level gold mining in the Witwatersrand Basin, extracting residual gold from the material. The operation uses a combination of milling, leaching and metallurgical processes to recover gold from the low-grade tailings. Ergo is one of DRDGOLD's two principal operating assets, alongside the Far West Gold Recoveries operation. The facility plays a significant role in the company's production profile and contributes to environmental rehabilitation by reprocessing and removing old tailings dumps from the landscape. Ergo's operations are energy-intensive, and the facility has explored renewable energy solutions to reduce reliance on grid power supplied by Eskom. The plant has undergone various expansions and optimisation projects since its establishment to improve throughput and recovery rates. Ergo represents a key component of South Africa's surface gold mining sector, which focuses on extracting value from the country's extensive legacy of gold mining waste.
