Electricity Transmission

Electricity transmission is the bulk movement of electrical energy from generating facilities to substations located near demand centres. The process uses high-voltage transmission lines, typically operating at voltages of 110 kV or higher, to transport electricity efficiently over long distances with minimal energy loss. Transmission networks form the backbone of modern electricity grids, connecting power stations—whether coal, gas, nuclear, hydro or renewable—to distribution networks that deliver electricity to end users. The sector encompasses the infrastructure of pylons, conductors, transformers, switchgear and control systems required to maintain grid stability and reliability. Transmission system operators manage the flow of electricity, balancing supply and demand in real time and ensuring frequency and voltage remain within safe operating limits. In Africa, transmission infrastructure is critical to energy security and economic development, enabling cross-border power trade through regional power pools such as the Southern African Power Pool and facilitating the integration of large-scale renewable energy projects in remote locations. Investment in transmission capacity is essential to unlock solar and wind resources, reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the energy transition. Ageing transmission networks, inadequate capacity and limited interconnection remain significant challenges across much of the continent, constraining electrification rates and industrial growth. Governments and development finance institutions prioritise transmission upgrades and expansion to improve grid resilience, reduce technical losses and enable job creation in construction, engineering and operations.
