Desalination

Desalination is the industrial process of removing salt and other minerals from seawater or brackish water to produce fresh water suitable for human consumption, agriculture or industrial use. The technology addresses water scarcity in arid regions, coastal areas and industries with high water demand, particularly where conventional freshwater sources are limited or overexploited. The two dominant methods are thermal distillation, which uses heat to evaporate and condense water, and reverse osmosis, which forces water through semipermeable membranes under high pressure to filter out dissolved salts. Reverse osmosis has become the preferred technology globally owing to lower energy consumption and operational costs compared with thermal processes. Desalination is widely deployed in the Middle East, North Africa, Australia and parts of the Americas, with the Gulf states and Israel among the largest users. The mining sector increasingly adopts desalination to secure water supplies in water-stressed regions, reducing reliance on groundwater and surface water that may be needed for communities and ecosystems. Energy intensity remains a key challenge, as desalination plants require substantial electricity, though integration with renewable energy sources is growing. Environmental concerns include the disposal of concentrated brine, which can harm marine ecosystems if not managed properly. Capital and operating costs are higher than conventional water treatment, but falling technology prices and rising water stress are driving broader adoption. Desalination capacity worldwide has expanded rapidly over the past two decades, supported by advances in membrane technology, energy recovery systems and modular plant designs.
