Conservation

Conservation is the protection, preservation and sustainable management of natural resources, ecosystems and biodiversity. The sector encompasses activities aimed at preventing the degradation of habitats, safeguarding endangered species and maintaining ecological processes that support life on Earth. Conservation efforts range from establishing protected areas such as national parks and marine reserves to implementing species recovery programmes and restoring degraded landscapes. The field operates through governmental agencies, non-governmental organisations, community-based initiatives and private-sector partnerships. Key strategies include habitat protection, anti-poaching enforcement, reforestation, wetland restoration and the promotion of sustainable land-use practices. Conservation increasingly intersects with economic development through mechanisms such as ecotourism, payment for ecosystem services and debt-for-nature swaps, which link environmental protection to financial incentives. In Africa, conservation plays a vital role in protecting iconic wildlife, supporting tourism economies and preserving critical ecosystems such as rainforests, savannahs and coastal zones. The sector faces challenges including habitat loss from agriculture and infrastructure development, poaching, climate change and the need to balance environmental goals with local livelihoods. International frameworks such as the Convention on Biological Diversity and regional initiatives guide conservation policy, while funding flows from governments, multilateral institutions, philanthropic foundations and climate finance mechanisms. Conservation has evolved from a preservationist approach to one that integrates human development, recognising that long-term environmental protection depends on the participation and benefit of local communities.
