Chinalco

Chinalco (Aluminum Corporation of China) is a Chinese state-owned mining and metals conglomerate and one of the world's largest aluminium producers. The company is headquartered in Beijing and operates across multiple continents, with significant interests in aluminium, copper, iron ore and other base metals. Chinalco is listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, with the Chinese government maintaining majority ownership through the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. The corporation's core business encompasses the full aluminium value chain, from bauxite mining and alumina refining to primary aluminium smelting and fabrication, alongside substantial copper and rare-earth operations. Beyond China, Chinalco has pursued strategic international investments, including stakes in major mining projects in Australia, Peru and other resource-rich jurisdictions. The company plays a central role in securing mineral resources for China's industrial base and energy transition ambitions, particularly in metals critical to electrification and renewable energy infrastructure. Chinalco's international expansion has included notable investments in Rio Tinto and other global mining houses, positioning it as a significant player in global commodity markets. The corporation employs tens of thousands of workers across its mining, refining and manufacturing operations. Chinalco was established in 2001 through the restructuring of state aluminium assets, consolidating China's fragmented aluminium industry under a single national champion.
