Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is Canada's independent federal nuclear regulator responsible for regulating the use of nuclear energy and material to protect health, safety, security and the environment. The commission also implements Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy and disseminates objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public. Established under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, the CNSC regulates all nuclear facilities and activities in Canada, including uranium mines and mills, nuclear power plants, nuclear research facilities, and the use of nuclear substances in medicine, industry and research. The commission is headquartered in Ottawa and operates regional offices across Canada to carry out inspections and compliance verification activities. It licenses and regulates the entire nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining through to the management and disposal of radioactive waste. The CNSC's mandate includes ensuring that licensees make adequate provision for the protection of the environment and the health and safety of persons, and maintain appropriate security measures. The commission reports to Parliament through the Minister of Natural Resources and operates at arm's length from government to ensure independent regulatory oversight. Its decisions on licensing and compliance are made by a tribunal of up to seven permanent members appointed by the Governor in Council. The CNSC plays a crucial role in Saskatchewan's uranium mining sector, which operates in regions such as the Athabasca Basin, by reviewing environmental assessments and issuing licences for exploration, development and operation of uranium projects.
