Bushveld Igneous Complex

The Bushveld Igneous Complex is a vast layered igneous intrusion located in South Africa, recognised as the world's largest known repository of platinum-group metals (PGMs). The complex extends across approximately 66 000 square kilometres in the northern and eastern parts of the country, spanning portions of Limpopo, North West, Mpumalanga and Gauteng provinces. It was formed around two billion years ago through successive injections of magma that cooled and crystallised into distinct layers, creating one of the most significant geological structures on Earth. The Bushveld Complex contains the Merensky Reef and UG2 Chromitite layer, which are the principal sources of the world's platinum, palladium, rhodium and other PGMs used in automotive catalysts, electronics and jewellery. In addition to PGMs, the complex hosts substantial reserves of chromium, vanadium, titanium, iron ore, tin, fluorite and copper-nickel sulphides. Major mining operations by companies including Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum, Northam Platinum and emerging producers extract ore from both underground and opencast workings. The complex is divided into eastern, western and northern limbs, each with distinct mineralisation characteristics and mining activity. Its economic significance to South Africa is immense, underpinning a substantial portion of the country's mining output, export earnings and employment in the platinum sector. The Bushveld Igneous Complex remains a focal point for exploration and development, with projects such as Platreef targeting the complex's northern limb for its polymetallic PGM, nickel, copper and gold mineralisation.
