Bowen Basin

The Bowen Basin is a major sedimentary basin and coal-producing region located in central Queensland, Australia. It extends approximately 600 kilometres from north to south and up to 250 kilometres from east to west, covering an area of roughly 60 000 square kilometres. The basin is one of Australia's most significant coal reserves, containing substantial deposits of both metallurgical coal used in steelmaking and thermal coal used for power generation. Major coal-producing centres within the basin include Moranbah, Blackwater, Emerald and Dysart, which collectively support a large mining workforce and associated infrastructure. The region's coal seams vary in thickness and quality, with some of the world's highest-grade coking coal found in the basin's central and northern areas. Mining operations range from large-scale openpit mines to underground longwall operations, operated by major international and Australian mining companies. The Bowen Basin's coal industry is a cornerstone of Queensland's economy, contributing billions of dollars in export revenue annually, with most production shipped through the ports of Gladstone, Hay Point and Abbot Point. Rail networks connecting the basin's mines to these coastal export terminals form critical infrastructure for the industry. The basin also contains significant reserves of coal seam gas, which has become an important energy resource. The Bowen Basin was named after the nineteenth-century Queensland governor Sir George Ferguson Bowen, and commercial coal mining in the region began in the early twentieth century, expanding rapidly from the 1960s onwards as global demand for metallurgical coal increased.
