Antamina

Antamina is a large open-pit copper and zinc mine located in the Andes mountains of Peru, approximately 270 km north of Lima in the Ancash region. The mine is operated by Compañía Minera Antamina, a joint venture owned by BHP, Glencore, Teck Resources and Mitsubishi Corporation. Antamina is one of the world's largest producers of copper and zinc concentrates, with significant by-product production of molybdenum, silver and lead. The operation processes ore through a concentrator plant with a capacity exceeding 130 000 tonnes a day, producing copper and zinc concentrates that are transported via a 302-km slurry pipeline to the port of Huarmey on Peru's Pacific coast. The mine sits at an altitude of about 4 300 m above sea level and operates year-round despite challenging high-altitude conditions. Antamina's ore reserves and resources support a multi-decade mine life, making it a cornerstone asset in the global copper and zinc supply chain. The operation employs several thousand people and is a major contributor to Peru's mining exports and regional economy. Antamina commenced commercial production in 2001 following construction of the mine, concentrator and pipeline infrastructure. The mine has undergone several expansions to increase throughput and extend its operational life, reinforcing its status as a world-class polymetallic mining complex.
