Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and the capital of the emirate of Abu Dhabi, the largest of the UAE's seven emirates. Located on an island in the Persian Gulf off the central western coast, the city serves as the political, industrial and cultural centre of the country. Abu Dhabi has a population of about 1.5-million people and is the second most populous city in the UAE after Dubai. The city is a major economic hub, with an economy heavily driven by oil and gas production, which accounts for a substantial portion of the emirate's GDP and government revenue. Abu Dhabi is home to the headquarters of numerous national and international energy companies, financial institutions and sovereign wealth funds, including the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. The city has invested heavily in diversifying its economy beyond hydrocarbons, developing sectors such as finance, tourism, aerospace, renewable energy and aluminium production. Key infrastructure includes Abu Dhabi International Airport, the Port of Khalifa and extensive industrial zones. Abu Dhabi also hosts the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency and is a regional centre for commodities trading, particularly in metals and energy. The city has grown rapidly since the discovery of oil in the late 1950s, transforming from a small fishing and pearling settlement into a modern metropolis and one of the wealthiest cities in the world.
