JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Impala Platinum (Implats) on Tuesday warned shareholders that the Zimbabwean government plans to compulsorily acquire about 50% of the mining claims owned by subsidiary company Zimbabwe Platinum Mines (Zimplats).

Zimplats had 30 days to lodge a written objection with the acquiring authority.

“Implats and Zimplats are taking legal advice in order to protect their rights and, in addition, remain in consultation with the relevant government authorities.  Shareholders will be kept informed of any material developments,” the company said in a statement.

The government’s intention had been set out in a Government Gazette Extraordinary dated March 1.

The 27 948 ha of land in question would be used “for the benefit of the public”, the government had said.
