PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Australian oil and gas major Woodside on Friday announced a second gas discovery at its assets offshore Myanmar.
The Thalin-1A exploration well in the Rakhine basin intersected a gross gas column of around 64 m, with the well reaching a total depth of 3 034 m.
This was the second gas discovery at the Myanmar assets, and followed the January discovery at the Shwe Yee Htun-1 well block.
CEO Peter Coleman told shareholders on Friday that the two discoveries at opposite ends of the Rakhine basin were a great result for the company.
“These results are very encouraging for future exploration and appraisal activity, given the significant footprint we have in Myanmar.”
Woodside was currently the largest acreage holder in the offshore Rakhine basin, with interest in six blocks making up 47 000 km2, and representing 20% of Woodside’s global acreage.
Coleman noted that the Thalin-1A well had successfully proven a working petroleum system and a new play type different to that encountered at Shwe Yee Htun-1
“These discoveries provide evidence of the high quality of offshore Myanmar as an exploration focus area,” he added.
