Women in Mining’s time to shine

Events over the years have given notice to the lack of female leadership in South Africa, especially in mining.  While women in top leadership positions are scarce, the Mining Sector is persistent to double the amount of women in mining by 2025 as announced by the Minerals Council and its members.

Bringing these future leaders to the forefront is women owned company Pinpoint Stewards who will be hosting the 2nd Annual Women and Leadership in Mining Conference on 30 & 31 August with the aim to develop, unite and empower women.

“Together with our media partners we have been able to spotlight current female leaders in mining and I believe that the future CEO’s of mining will be discovered at these type conferences.  It’s time to shine!” says Ankia Roux, Co-Founder of Pinpoint Stewards.

She adds: “Women attending this conference will have the opportunity to strengthen structures within their organisations to better develop, support and retain women in their places of work.  Yes, many women are empowered but the time is now, for leaders to promote functional organisational systems, build healthy workplace cultures and create more equitable opportunities for women.”

Delegates will be able to engage with the powerhouse of speakers who include: General Manager- Mining, Impala Platinum, Nonkululeko Mabuza,

Mogaleadi Seabela, Section Manager-Anglo American Kumba Iron Ore, Khutjo Ivy Lebelo, Senior Mining Engineer-De Beers Group, Venetia Mine, Mbali Milanzi, Commercial Director-Tshepa Basadi Group,  Superintendent Mining-EXXARO, Dolly Masilela, Raksha Naidoo Chairperson-WiMSA, Fatima Hayat, Human Resource Manager-Glencore Alloys-Wonderkop Smelter, Fatima Collins, Project Manager – Women of Sibanye Stillwater-Sibanye Stillwater, Tumi Sedupane, Group Human Resource Manager-Overlooked Group.  Mokgadi Maloba, Group Environmental Manager & ESG Coordinator-Salungano Group, Maropeng Ketjoe, Project Manager Social and Legal Compliance-Ivanhoe Mines.

With international women’s day in March, women’s month around the corner in August and legislation in place, what will it take to get women on par?  The urgency to act is now, to ensure women are equipped to lead and amplify their efforts to give equal status to women rising into leadership roles.

But the question remains, why are women not visible and taking up prominent roles across all levels within the mining sector?

Supporting women empowerment at the event are exhibitors Tshepa Basadi Group, River Minerals (Pty) Ltd, Total Energies (Pty) Ltd, Blue Hawk Tactical and Safer City.   It’s not all work no play, De Grendel will be sponsoring the wine tasting which will take place after day one of the conference for women to network and talk business.

Giving back - The conference seeks to elevate the issue of GBV and support mentorship and therefore a percentage of the profits for the conference will be donated, to each, the Lighthouse Baby shelter and WiMSA.
