Project Description
The Thabametsi project has proven and probable reserves of 130-million tonnes.

The proposed openpit mine is expected to produce an average of 3.9-million tonnes a year in power station coal for the Thabametsi independent power producer coal-fired power plant, which, in turn, is expected to produce 600 MW by 2021.

Thabametsi has a mine life of more than 30 years.

Latest Developments
The Thabametsi mine has all the required licences in place.

However, the environmental authorisation has been appealed and Exxaro is following due process to get the appeal finalised.

The rate of production ramp-up will ultimately depend on the developments with the coal baseload independent power producer procurement programme.
