Canada-based Tahoe Resources on Thursday evening suspended mining operations at the La Arena mine, in Peru, in response to a protest over the impact of the mine on the nearby community of La Ramada.

A group of between 80 and 100 people had trespassed onto the mine property, disrupted operations and demanded payment for the alleged impacts of dust and vibration from blasting activities on the community, Tahoe said in a statement on Friday.

The miner said that it had filed formal charges against the protest leaders for illegal trespass.

Earlier in the week, Tahoe reported a gold theft attempt at the same mine. Holes were cut in the top of a pipeline to extract gold from the solution. The attempted theft resulted in a discharge of the solution and the contamination of the storm water management system.
