Diamond company De Beers finds some of its most valuable diamonds on the floor of the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Namibia. It recovers the diamonds by sucking them off the seabed in a vacuuming action that creates angst among some environmental organisations and helicoptering them to shore. The world’s biggest diamond producer has spent $157-million on this state-of-the-art exploration vessel that scours 6 000 km2 of seabed for diamonds as part of its 50:50 joint venture with the Namibian government. The investment will help the company maintain yearly production of 1.2-million diamond carats for the next two decades, says De Beers CEO Bruce Cleaver.
