JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – South African Chamber of Mines (CoM) COO Roger Baxter will replace Bheki Sibiya as CE on May 1, following Sibiya’s early retirement, president Mike Teke announced on Thursday.

Sibiya would retire on April 30 to pursue “personal interests”.

“The council … believe Baxter's experience in the mining industry and his leadership skills will enable the CoM to continue to carry out its role of representing the industry effectively as it engages with all stakeholders,” stated the chamber.

Sibiya was grateful for the opportunity of being the CoM CE and congratulated Baxter on his ”well-deserved” appointment.

“I sincerely thank Teke, the office bearers, the council and all the members of the CoM for the opportunity of being of service to the industry,” he said.

Further, he thanked former Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu and current Minister Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi and their staff for their leadership, as well as the leaders of the trade unions, namely the National Union of Mineworkers, the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, Solidarity and Uasa for their robust cooperation.
