JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Domestic gold producer Sibanye Gold on Tuesday announced the appointment of James Wellsted as senior VP of corporate affairs, with effect from January 1.

Wellsted was previously employed as a mining analyst at financial services firm JP Morgan, before which he headed up investor and media relations at exploration company Mvelaphanda Resources for seven years prior to its unbundling in 2011.

Between 1998 and 2004, Wellsted was a top-rated analyst at JP Morgan, focusing on South African and African gold-mining companies, while contributing to the company’s supply, demand and gold price forecasts.

He holds a BSC (Hon) in Geology from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Commenting on the appointment, Sibanye Gold CEO Neal Froneman said Wellsted’s background as a gold and general mining analyst at JP Morgan, coupled with his investor relations experience, would make him a valuable addition to the Sibanye Gold executive team.

Sibanye Gold is a wholly owned subsidiary of Gold Fields, which owns the Kloof-Driefontein Complex and Beatrix gold mines, as well as various service companies in South Africa.

The company will be listed as a separate and independent company on the JSE – its primary listing – and the NYSE, in February.
