TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Diversified Canadian miner Sherritt International confirmed on Wednesday that certain employees were partaking in strike action at its Ambatovy nickel/cobalt plant, near Toamasina, Madagascar.

The strike followed a short similar action at the Ambatovy mine last month, which, together with unscheduled maintenance, resulted in the operation reporting lower-than-expected first-quarter output.

TSX-listed Sherritt was optimistic of another prompt resolution and was working cooperatively with employee representatives and government officials to review any grievances and resolve the dispute quickly.

The plant continued to operate with no significant impact to production and Sherritt did not expect the strike to affect the full-year production guidance of 47 000 t to 52 000 t of finished nickel.
