The Open Group, a vendor- and technology-neutral consortium approved the Exploration and Mining Business Capability Refer-ence Map last month, after being subjected to a rigorous standards process.

This is the second standard developed by the Exploration, Mining, Metals and Minerals (EMMM) Forum – a working group that provides a global collaborative platform to create standards for exploration and mining across all types of metals and minerals – operating under the auspices of The Open Group, which is represented locally by enterprise architecture specialist company Real IRM.

The standard follows the Exploration and Mining Business Process Reference Model (EM model), which was accepted as a technical standard of The Open Group last year.
“The vendor-neutral model Exploration and Mining Business Capability Reference Map, which is a component of the EM framework, defines the standard for the business capabilities of organisations that operate in the exploration and mining sectors,” says EMMM Forum director Sarina Viljoen.

She highlights that the standard enables organisations to develop their own business capabilities without having to invest in developing their own enterprise architecture.

Viljoen explains that a business capability is used by a business to achieve a specific business outcome and it describes what a business is required to do to create value for its customers and stakeholders.

“The business capability map is captured in business terms and is defined as such to ensure consistency,” she adds,
