JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – JSE-listed platinum miner Lonmin on Thursday confirmed that Sandvik Mining contractor general foreman Mark Potgieter, 36, had died as a result of injuries sustained in an accident that occurred during the maintenance of a load-haul dumper at its Hossy shaft, at the Marikana mine, on Wednesday afternoon.

A full investigation was under way.

“I am sure everyone at Sandvik Mining and Lonmin shares my deep distress at the loss of a colleague. Potgieter’s life was cut tragically short and our heartfelt condolences go out to his wife, Susanna, their two children, families, friends and colleagues,” Lonmin CEO Ben Magara said.

He added that the company was in the process of examining the scene to determine the cause of the accident.

“We will be working with Sandvik Mining, unions and the Department of Mineral Resources to get to the bottom of exactly what led to this incident,” the company said.
