Safety inspectorate halts mining activities at Platmin’s Pilanesberg mine

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Mining activities at junior-miner Platmin’s Pilanesberg mine in South Africa’s Bushveld Complex, have been suspended due to safety concerns.

The TSX- and Aim-listed firm said on Tuesday that the country’s safety inspectorate had suspended operations on June 5. Mine management are engaging with authorities to rectify the procedures in order for mining activities to resume.

Platmin said that plant operations and commissioning have not been affected by the suspension of mining activities.

The Pilanesberg platinum mine is currently ramping up to full production. The mine had a proven and probable platinum group elements (PGE) mineral reserves totalling 4,4-million ounces 3PGEs plus gold, and would produce about 250 000 oz/y for the first 11 years of its 16-year life.
