Rio confirms rail issues in the Pilbara

PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Rio Tinto on Tuesday confirmed a rail bridge failure in the Pilbara, prompting the miner to temporarily halt rail haulage from the Brockman 2 and Brockman 4 iron-ore mines.

A spokesperson for the company said a structural failure of a small section of a rail overpass, which was currently under construction, had resulted in dirt falling on the rail line below.

No injuries were reported, and production at the Brockman mines remained unaffected.

The Brockman mines have a joint capacity to produce 31-million tonnes of iron-ore a year.

Rio had notified the relevant authorities and said an internal investigation into the incident had been launched.
