The old Durban Deep mine shaft, near Roodepoort, on Gauteng’s old-gold West Rand, is earmarked for refurbishment by Australian-listed exploration and development company West Wits Mining. Although this shaft descends to 1 100 m, West Wits only plans to mine at a level no deeper than about 500 m, where it will target untouched gold-bearing orebodies not mined by the former owner, DRDGold, which now specialises in turning surface resources to highly positive account on the East Rand and the Far West Rand.
