PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner Perseus Mining has reported a fire in the processing plant at its Edikan operation, in Ghana, but said that it was likely that the damage was contained to only one area.

The ASX- and TSX-listed miner said on Thursday that the fire had started during a scheduled maintenance, and as such caused no injuries. The fire was brought under control within an hour.

MD Jeff Quartermaine said that investigations into the cause of the fire and the damage incurred, were under way.

“We’re hopeful that all necessary repairs can be completed and approvals obtained to enable ore processing operations to resume within seven days. Its likely that damage has been contained to an area of the plant around the cyclones, and may involve damage to a cyclone, several rubber lined pipes, associated electrical cabling and air lines.”

During the three months to December, Perseus produced about 48 400 oz of gold from the Edikan mine, at an all-in unit cost of $1 228/oz, which was 8.5% lower than the previous quarter.
