NUM to march against sale of Sibanye hospital

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has stood up against the sale of the Leslie Williams Hospital owned by Sibanye Gold to an undisclosed private company.

The NUM said in a statement that its Sibanye Gold health service branch would march on Wednesday from the hospital to Sibanye Gold’s health management offices, in Carletonville, to hand over a memorandum of their demands.

“As the NUM, we believe that the company is running away from its responsibility of looking after the wellbeing of its employees and decided to sell its hospital to [a] private company,” said NUM mining house coordinator Kenneth Buda.

“After the decision by the company to sell its hospital, our members are the one's who are suffering the most as the service is dismally poor as we speak,” he added.

The march would also address other issues NUM had, including unilateral restructuring by Sibanye Gold without consulting NUM branch committees; the reversal of affirmative action by employing white males only; and the undermining of transformation agenda by the CEO Neal Froneman, including disregarding compliance with the mining charter.
