JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified mining company Rio Tinto has awarded civil and mining contractor NRW Holdings a $30-million contract for bulk earthworks and civil works for the Yandi Oxbow project at the Yandicoogina mine, in the Pilbara.

The scope of the contract included the construction of a 4.5 km haul road, the construction of a heavy vehicle bridge over the existing railway, over 700 000 cm of embankment construction, over 3 200 lineal metres of culverts and upgrades, and rerouting and extensions to existing light vehicle access roads.

NRW, which announced the contract on Friday, said it would start on the site in late July and that the contract would run for 38 weeks.

The Yandi Oxbow project was aimed at sustaining current production at the 80-million-tonne-a-year Yandi mine.
