PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Aditya Birla would restart mining activities at its Nifty copper project, in Western Australia, this week, in a two-phased approach, the company reported on Monday.

Actual underground mining activities would start this week, with the ore being delivered to surface. Operations would gradually ramp up in sequence with all functions, including processing operations during August.

Aditya Birla said that the Nifty operations would not achieve optimal levels during the first few months of the ramp-up, but the company would strive to become financially viable during the course of the remainder of the year.

Based on a detailed stoping, development and production schedule, Aditya Birla was expected to produce between 16 000 t and 18 000 t of copper during the remainder of the financial year.

However, this production figure could vary depending on the success of the ramp-up phase and other variables.

The Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum earlier this month lifted the prohibition notice against the Nifty underground mine, after suspending all mining operations in March owing to the discovery of a sinkhole.
