JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Gold major Newmont Mining has awarded power generation specialist Zenith Energy preferred bidder status to build, own and operate a 62 MW power station for its Tanami gold mine, which is about 520 km north-west of Alice Springs in the remote Tanami desert of the Northern Territory.

The power station will be a 52 MW gas-based plant with 10 MW diesel back-up generation.

Subject to a power purchase agreement, which is to be negotiated in the coming weeks, the power station could start supplying gas-generated electricity to the mine in the first quarter of 2019.

The agreement between Newmont and Zenith has a ten-year term.
