Global information technology (IT) and geospatial software services provider RMSI will showcase its geological data management solution at this year’s Investing in African Mining Indaba.
RMSI CEO and joint MD Anup Jindal says the solution was developed during 2014 to address the industry’s pressing need for a one-stop management solution for large volumes of exploration and production data.
He says the solution assists with exploration data cleansing, legacy data management and geographic information system (GIS) migration.
In addition to the data management solution, RMSI will also showcase its solutions for mine surveying and mapping.
“With a project footprint in more than 16 countries in Africa, RMSI is a technology-driven consulting company that synthesises domain knowledge with various technologies, including GIS, remote sensing and modelling for exploration of mineral assets,” says Jindal.
He notes that RMSI offers key services, such as due diligence, mineral asset evaluation, geological and geophysical surveys, geological modelling, resource and reserve estimation and information IT and GIS services to the global exploration industry.
The company will be involved in various ongoing projects this year involving exploration, mapping and data management in several countries, including Mozambique, Nigeria, India and Laos.
“We will move into the detailed exploration stage of these projects and develop them for the project developers and miners,” says Jindal.
He further reveals that, during the indaba, RMSI intends to secure several contracts for the development of gold and coal projects in Africa.
“Our data management services will be a key driver for our business this year,” he states.
2014 Achievements
In 2014, RMSI was awarded a World Bank-funded project to map Nigeria’s mineral corridor.
Jindal states that the project required RMSI to use an “innovative” mapping system for the country’s “dynamic” mineral corridors to facilitate the development of minerals- and mining- based industries.
He further notes that, in the mining industry, there is a growing interest in using advanced technologies, such as satellite remote sensing and geospatial technology, for integrated planning in mining-dominated areas.
“In 2014, RMSI also spearheaded an innovative concept for project mapping in northern India, using satellite remote sensing technologies to access changes in environmental parameters in the region’s mining belt, which is considered to be an environmentally sensitive area,” he says.
Mining Indaba
RMSI has attended the Mining Indaba since 2008 and, for the past three years, has attended the event as an exhibitor and official sponsor.
Jindal highlights the Mining Indaba as one of the largest mining events in Africa, attracting investors, exploration companies and service providers.
He tells Mining Weekly that he intends to attend several workshops and presentations during the event, such as the African Mining Ministerial Forum, the Sustainable Development Forum, and the Commodities Review and Outlook Forum.
“The event is growing exponentially each year, thereby providing a great platform to all participants. “Over the years, we have had an enriching experience while attending the indaba, as it has helped us to connect with our existing clients, partners and key prospective clients. RMSI therefore sees the event as a forum that helps us understand market sentiment, industry needs and future trends.”
He adds that, through the company’s participation in the event over the years, RMSI has made several business contacts that have resulted in securing several business contracts.
“We are looking forward to a high-energy 2015 event. Last year’s indaba provided us with several qualified opportunities and generated business for us and we are hoping for some interesting leads this year as well,” Jindal enthuses.
The Investing in African Mining Indaba takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and runs from February 9 to 12.
