MULTI-VIEW PRESSURE

Many viewpoints are pressuring new Minerals Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi, who is tasked with piloting amended minerals legislation through Parliament. The oil and gas lobby has personally convinced him that hydrocarbons legislation should be hived off separately from the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA) Amendment Bill. The Chamber of Mines wants President Jacob Zuma to sign the MPRDA Bill into law as is and Bridgette Radebe, the chairperson of the South African Mining Development Association, which represents junior miners, has urged the President not to sign it. The opposition Democratic Alliance, in turn, wants the Bill sent back to Parliament.
