Transnet Freight Rail launched the world’s longest production train, with 375 wagons, on October 24. The train carries about 24000 t of manganese from Sishen, in the Northern Cape, to Saldanha Bay, in the Western Cape, a distance of about 860 km. This 4-km-long train pictured above was driven solely by a woman, 33 year-old Lisa Clarke. The train comprises four locomotives, including a combination of both electric and diesel-electric in an evenly distributed format with one in front, another 125 wagons behind, the third another 125 wagons behind that and the last one at the rear. The three trailing locomotives were controlled, by Clarke, through radio control from the lead locomotive. Photograph: Creamer Media Chief Photographer Dylan Slater
