JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – After serving two five-year terms, Abiel Mngomezulu is stepping down as CEO and president of national mineral research organisation Mintek, effective September 3.
The Mintek board had not yet announced his successor after advertising the position in May.
Mngomezulu, a trained geologist, joined Mintek from the former Department of Minerals and Energy, where he was the deputy director-general of the Mineral Development Branch.
He was appointed Mintek CEO and president in 2007, with the contract being renewed in 2012.
“He leaves behind an organisation that is sustainable and financially healthy, and is on a firm footing for further growth,” the company said in a statement on Friday, pointing out that under Mngomezulu’s stewardship, Mintek achieved clean audit opinions in the 2012/13, 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 financial years.
