MINERAL RICH, PEOPLE POOR: African Union Commission chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma pleaded at last week’s Junior Indaba for a new win-win approach to ensure that Africans benefited from the exploitation of natural resources in Africa, which she said was mineral rich, but without those riches reaching its poor population. She also urged South Africa to domesticate Africa’s Agenda 2063 vision, which she believed goes beyond South Africa’s own National Development Plan. She urged private-sector mining companies to work together with government to develop skills and placed great store by value addition and beneficiation and an end to raw ore leaving the continent in unprocessed form.
