The Council for Geoscience (CGS) has appointed Mosa Mabuza its new CEO.

The position was previously held by Simon Sikhosana, who retired in November 2016. Mabuza was subsequently seconded to the CGS as acting CEO by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).

Since Mabuza’s secondment, the CGS has managed to reprioritise geological mapping by championing the refocus of the organisation towards a geoscientific programme that seeks to map South Africa at a scale of 1: 50 000.

Mabuza is a geologist with extensive exploration experience in Southern Africa, West Africa and Canada, among others.

He previously held various positions at mining majors De Beers and Anglo American and was appointed the DMR’s deputy director-general for the mineral policy and investment promotion branch in 2012.
