JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – London- and Johannesburg-listed Lonmin on Thursday said it had achieved 15-million fall-of-ground (FoG) fatality-free shifts across its Marikana operations and recorded six-million fatality-free shifts at its Karee shaft.
“These milestones were achieved through a focus on leadership, simplifying systems, creating an enabling environment and the development of a safety conscious culture.
“Of course, the major challenge now is maintaining and building on this commendable achievement in the future,” acting CEO Simon Scott said in a statement.
Lonmin VP Mark Munroe attributed the achievement of the milestones to the positive and active involvement of all the mining group’s employees.
“Together, we are now reaping the fruits of a host of innovative and forward-thinking policies and the deployment of cutting-edge technology aimed not only at immediate safety improvements, but also at changing thinking and behaviour to achieve long-term change,” he added.
The FoG fatality-free shifts were achieved on January 21, while the Karee achieved its fatality-free shifts on January 11.
