Legacy Iron Ore starts up Australian gold mine

Prestrip activities at Mount Celia, Western Australia.

Legacy Iron Ore, a Perth-based subsidiary of India’s National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), has officially opened its Mount Celia gold mine, south of Laverton, Western Australia.

Attended by delegates representing NMDC and the Indian government, the opening ceremony on Monday marked the evolution of Legacy Iron Ore from an explorer to a producer.

The Mount Celia mine is the company’s first mining operation, noted CEO Rakesh Gupta.

“The asset will generate revenue to fund ongoing exploration at the prospective South Laverton projects, as the company plans to bring more resources to a mine-ready stage and add additional shareholder value,” he commented in a statement on Tuesday.

The Mount Celia deposits, comprising Kangaroo Bore and Blue Peter, form part of the South Laverton project, which holds multiple prospective tenements along the Keith Kilkenny tectonic zone and the southern part of the Laverton tectonic zone.

Legacy reported that surface and mine infrastructure works at Mount Celia were well advanced, with prestripping having started and ore mining set to start in the Blue Peter pits in the weeks ahead.

First ore will be processed in the first quarter of 2024.
