PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed diamond miner Kimberley Diamonds has reported a fatality at its Lerala mine, in Botswana.

The company said that an employee who was engaged as part of the care-and-maintenance team was involved in a fatal incident on Wednesday, which resulted in activities at Lerala ceasing, pending a full review of operating and health-and-safety procedures.

A full investigation into the incident was also being undertaken.

Kimberley had been aiming to restart mining at the Lerala operation during the fourth quarter of this year, in the hopes of producing at a rate of 1.4-million tonnes of ore a year, producing an average of 375 000 ct/y over a seven-year mine life.
