Heemskirk tin project, Tasmania

Name of the Project
Heemskirk tin project.

Location
Tasmania.

Client
Stellar Resources.

Project Description
Heemskirk Tin has a mining inventory of 3.95-million tonnes.

The project is based on a 600 000 t/y underground mining operation at Heemskirk. The mine is expected to produce about 4 527 t/y of tin in concentrate over an initial mine life of 6.8 years.

Mining will be undertaken on four orebodies – Upper and Lower Queen Hill, Severn and Montana.

Mining will be a combination of longhole open stoping and cut-and-fill methods.

Processing will be at a rate of 600 000 t/y for all orebodies except Lower Queen Hill, which will be processed at an estimated 460 000 t/y.

An optimisation study completed on the prefeasibility study (PFS), which was published in 2013, has increased tin recovery from 69.7% to 72.8%.

Jobs to be created

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
The optimisation study has increased the project’s pretax net present value from A$61-million to A$99-million. The ungeared internal rate of return has increased from 19% in the 2013 PFS to 27%. Payback has decreased from the 3.7 years in 2013 to three years.

Value
Total preproduction capital has decreased from $126.7-million to A$110.2-million.

Duration

Latest Developments
Stellar Resources is investigating ore-sorting technology at the Heemskirk tin project. An initial X-ray sorting test programme, using drill core from the Severn and Lower Queen Hill deposits, has been able to identify and separate high-density tin-bearing particles from waste.
