Construction of the demonstration plant at the Green River lithium project, in Utah, is under way, ASX-listed Anson Resources reports.

The demonstration plant, which is located on previously purchased industrial-use land, will showcase all the processing steps required to produce battery-grade lithium carbonate at an initial production capacity of 500 kg/y.

The Green River demonstration plant will start production in January.

Anson in July this year entered into an agreement to acquire the Green River project, which has the potential to increase the Joint Ore Reserve Committee-compliant resource of the company’s existing Paradox project, without the need for further drilling. The Green River project area at the time of purchase contained 18 historical oil and gas wells of which 3 hosted recorded lithium values.

A definitive feasibility study into the Paradox lithium project estimated that Phase 1 of the project could produce some 13 074 t/y of high-purity lithium carbonate, delivering revenues of $5.05-billion over its 23 years of operation.

The study found that the project would require a capital investment of $495-million.
