PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Diversified miner Glencore has confirmed that production at its West Wallsend underground coal mine, in New South Wales, has been halted, owing to longwall issues.

Glencore in May announced that mining at West Wallsend would be completed next year, consistent with the life-of-mine planning. The diversified miner had previously considered a number of options to extend the mine life at West Wallsend, but current market conditions did not support this avenue.

A spokesperson for the company told Mining Weekly Online on Monday that Glencore was investigating a number of options to resume operations at West Wallsend as soon as possible, following the geological issues experienced at the current longwall operation.

“However, it is expected that production could be affected for some time,” the spokesperson said.
