Former South African Reserve Bank governor joins Glencore board

Former Reserve Bank Governor Gill Marcus has been appointed to Glencore's board

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Diversified mining group Glencore has appointed the former governor of South Africa’s Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, to its board as a nonexecutive director.

Announcing the appointment on Thursday, chairperson Tony Hayward said that Marcus would be an asset to the Glencore board.

“We believe that her long record of public service coupled with her finance experience, geopolitical insights and non-executive board experience will be a great benefit to us."

Marcus was Deputy Minister of Finance from 1996 to 1999, when she was appointed deputy governor of the Reserve Bank, a position she held for five years. In 2009, Marcus was appointed governor and remained in that role until 2014.

Marcus was also the nonexecutive chairperson of the Absa Group from 2007 to 2009 and has served on the boards of Gold Fields and Bidvest.

The Glencore appointment will take effect on January 1.
