JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – TSX- and LSE-listed copper-miner First Quantum expects its recently restarted Bwana Mkubwa solvent extraction/electrowinning copper plant, in Zambia, to produce about 800 t/m of copper cathode until the end of this year.
The plant was restarted earlier this month after stockpiled ore from the depleted Lonshi open-pit mine, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), had been sourced.
This came after authorities in the DRC lifted a ban on copper-ore exports, which had led to the closure of the plant at the end of 2008.
First Quantum continued to seek additional sources of economically suitable feed for the plant.
Newswire Reuters reported in July last year that the Zambian authorities have approved the copper miner’s plans to open a new mine, the Fishtie deposit, to supply the Bwana Mkubwa plant with feedstock of 100 000 t/m.
