DRIVERLESS MINE TRUCK

New radar-based light detection and ranging (Lidar) and global positioning system technologies are providing the vision for a new generation of driverless mining vehicles. In this picture, a self-driving truck is seen driving through underground tunnels at the Kristineberg mine, in the Boliden area of Arvidsjaur, Sweden. Three-dimensional maps of the vehicle’s surroundings enable it to navigate its way through 7 km of tunnels to a depth of 1 320 m. The 76-year-old Kristineberg, Boliden’s oldest mine, applies cut-and-fill and groove mining methods to extract zinc, copper, lead, gold and silver from the polymetallic orebody.
