On the evening of Monday, April 2, a bus transporting 50 mineworkers from the Ga-Maroga village, in Mpumalanga, to the Modikwa platinum mine, 15 km north-west of Burgersfort, was set alight, killing six and injuring 44. One of five suspects arrested appeared in the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court at the time of going to press. Kgaogelo Moime‚ 29‚ was arrested on Tuesday at Balotsaneng‚ Maandagshoek‚ and has been remanded in custody. Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has called on police to dig deeper into this case. Mantashe said he would be meeting with Police Minister Bheki Cele to launch a unit to deal with illegal mining.
