COLOURED SPARKLE

Coloured gemstones are sparkling. Aim-listed Gemfields has generated revenues totalling $325-million from 18 emerald and beryl auctions since mid-2009, with this month’s emerald, beryl and amethyst auction netting $14.95-million. Headed by South African-born top brass Ian Harebottle, above, and Sean Gilbertson, Gemfields has, in the last 22 months, conducted seven auctions in Zambia, which hosts its Kagem emerald mine. “It’s pleasing to see Zambian emeralds continuing to enjoy such firm demand,” commented Johannesburg-born Gemfields CEO Harebottle, 52, who is seen taking part in a Bloomberg Television interview in New York. The company also mines rubies in Mozambique.
