Buffalo resumes Magdalena production

JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Operations at JSE- and TSX-listed Buffalo Coal’s Magdalena underground mine, in KwaZulu-Natal, were back in full swing on Tuesday after an isolated incident involving the ingress of water halted production three weeks ago.

On September 16, the coal producer, previously known as Forbes & Manhattan Coal, reported that emergency procedures were initiated and the mine evacuated safely after water entered one section of the mine.

Production was halted as the company worked to assess the extent and impact of the incident on the mine, which produced one-million tons of bituminous coal a year and 70% of Buffalo's total yearly output.

“We would like to commend the personnel on site for their sterling efforts and hard work in mitigating the effects of the inrush of water at Magdalena in such a short time, and to be safely back in production,” said Buffalo CEO Malcolm Campbell in a statement.
