JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Operations at TSX- and JSE-listed Buffalo Coal’s Magdalena underground mine, in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have been halted following the ingress of water in one of the sections at the mine earlier on Tuesday.

The company reported that its emergency procedures had been initiated and the mine had been evacuated safely.

Management was working to assess the extent and impact of the incident, while the Department of Mineral Resources had been informed.

“We are pleased with the reaction of our emergency team and the implementation of our emergency procedures. The safety of our employees is our top priority at all times,” said Buffalo CEO Malcolm Campbell

Magdalena produces about one-million tons of bituminous coal a year, which forms about 70% of the company’s overall output.
