JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Botswana government has approved the environmental-impact statement of the Letlhakane project, Australian developer A-Cap announced on Wednesday.

The approval was an important requirement for securing a mining licence for what would be Botswana’s first uranium mine. A-Cap submitted an application for a mining licence in August last year.

The company is planning a shallow openpit mining operation with an 18 year mine life. A production rate of 3.75-million pounds a year is planned for the first five years.

The Letlhakane uranium project is one of the largest undeveloped uranium deposits in the world, with a resource of 365.7-million pounds.
