Power transmission products on show

29th August 2014

Bibby Turboflex SA, which is celebrating 85 years in South Africa, will again be exhibiting at Electra Mining Africa.

The company, which is part of US-based Altra Industrial Motion Corporation, is putting on display a range of power transmission products, including gear couplings (Bibby and Amerigear), grid spring couplings (Bibby taper and straight grid), disc couplings (Turboflex high performance and composite shafts), torque limiters and safety elements, Bibbigard high-speed backstops, Marland low-speed holdbacks, Marland Cecon and Cebmag clutches and RotoFluid fluid couplings.

Some of Bibby Turboflex SA’s recent successes include supplying grid couplings and Turboflex disc type couplings for the fan and pump drives for power utility Eskom’s new coal-fired power stations – Medupi, in Limpopo, and Kusile, in Mpumalanga.

The company further supplied Marland hold-backs to diversified mining group Exxaro for its Grootegeluk mine, which will provide coal to the Medupi power station. Marland low-speed holdbacks were also supplied to new Sasol mines, near Secunda, in Mpumalanga. Bibby Turboflex SA says these units are among the largest supplied in South Africa on incline conveyors.

Over the last couple of years, Bibby Turboflex SA has seen an increase in the supply for prod-ucts into neighbouring African countries - from gear couplings for cement plants in Nigeria to grid couplings for sugar mills in Kenya. Fluid couplings have been supplied for drives in Mozambique, and a number of Marland holdbacks and grid couplings have been supplied into Zambia and Botswana.

Dr James Bibby invented the resilient grid coupling in 1917, which has been emulated by many companies around the world. From the humble resilient coupling, the company has progressed to enjoy world recognition as a major supplier of all types of couplings by providing engineering solutions to the transmission markets. In 2004, Bibby UK was acquired by the Altra Industrial Motion. The company brings together strong brands covering over 40 product lines with production facilities in 11 countries.
